White
is not my colour of choice. I love it as much as I love waking up
during winter (not much- believe me. Snooze x100). I know it's been
"in"- but I don't do "in" and following trends is not my thing. Until I
meddled with the idea of buying a white pair of jeans (went there, and
felt somewhat awkward. Does it go with anything?!). One foot in already,
I started to think about white more and more. Then all these fashion
instagrammers started posting "all-white looks".
All white?!
The
last time I wore white from head to toe was on my wedding day, three
years ago. Felt magical then, not so sure how I would feel now. But you
know what? I'm going to do it. Nothing really scares me when it comes to
fashion (oh wait, I still can't be too close to a pair of jeggings).
Some photos of me playing with white...
(More to come at the end of the weekend).

Girl Envy
You
know which girls I envy? The ones who look so put together without
lifting a finger. The ones who glide through life looking effortlessly
chic, almost as if their outfits chose them and not the other way
around. They wake up and they don't even need to think about what to
wear. They just do it, it just happens. Dressing is intuitive,
instinctive for them. Everything fits- from the jewellery, make-up to
the shoes. They make fashion look easy and fun.
That girl is not me.
It's
not that I plan my outfit a few years in advance before wearing it out,
it's just that I need to have a vague idea what style or look I am
going for. Most of the time I would have one key item in mind (usually
something I have recently purchased) and work around that. I usually
make a mental note of this before going to bed (less of an effort on
work nights). You might think I am crazy and a bit on the OCD side of
things, but believe me, my mornings are usually stress free and I am out
of the house in record speed. It surprises a few people.
Don't
get me wrong, it's not robotic, tiring or anything like that. Most
people plan what's for breakfast, I just plan what I want to wear. I do
this because I don't do effortless. Getting dressed for me isn't a
matter of "oh, let me look through my wardrobe today" kind of thing. I
could be there for a long, long time. I also hate making a mess,
throwing clothes everywhere before I find "the look".
This
brings me back to what I was saying earlier about my girl envy. My
cousin Lo falls into this category (I said I would give you an
honourable mention). I hate her most when I compliment her outfit and she replies with "This? Oh,it's nothing special. I just put it on."
"Just put it on." No sweat, no thought, nothing. It just happened.
So I will end here, and leave you with a few photos of "effortless looks" that bring out the green-eyed monster in me:

I'm not the greatest fan of Miranda Kerr's style, I just love how effortless she makes everything look! |
White bags are my latest style crush (just not sure I want to pay $$ to see it get dirty?) |
I swear I didn't mean for everything to be black & white...

Confessions of a Material Girl
When I was younger, I was known as "Material Girl". Being the youngest, I took advantage of my pre-kindergarten days and would sneak into the rooms of my three sisters (who were all off at school oblivious) and try on their clothes. I would prance around the mirror wearing anything and everything that did not belong to me. You see, everything is more alluring when it is not yours. When three thirty came ticking by, like Cinderella, the clothes magically came off and I walked around innocently in what I liked to call "my homie-g" clothes.
My sisters never knew.
This fascination with clothes, with fashion, style, has intensified year by year and followed me into my adulthood (poor husband- literally). For me, I view fashion as an exciting art, an opportunity to express who you are and how you want others to see you. One likes to believe we don't live in such a superficial world, where what you wear (how is that for alliteration?) does not cause others to cast judgement. Not everyone will agree with me on this, and that's the exciting thing about life- we all have such varied views.
Whatever fashion means to you, I hope you will find something here on lifeasmewhoyen to inspire and challenge you,

My Winter Trick?
Braving the cold in the Blue Mountains wearing: dress by Backstage & bag by Prada (Queen's Birthday Long Weekend, 2013) |
I love dresses. By the time I was twenty, I had over 200+ dresses in my collection. Don't ask me how, don't ask me why, it just happened. But as you've noticed, I've got a vendetta against winter. Even more so, when I find dresses are almost a sin to wear in the cold. But I wear it anyway. Here is my winter trick:
Forget the flowy, 'I'm-in-the-Bahamas-type' dresses and go for something super tight. Team with stockings (not leggings) and you're good to go. Of course, this won't protect you completely from the cold (am I just stating the obvious?). If you're feeling sensible, team with a coat (as I did below):

Victoria Beckham in Black + White
Victoria Beckham in Beijing to launch her fashion line @ Lane Crawford |
I
followed Victoria Beckham as a little girl and secretly wanted to be
just like her. Then she met David Beckham and things got a little weird
(do you blame her?). In recent years, her transformation has been
amazing to witness. The new VB is sans boob job, sans tight provocative
mini skirts and everything else that makes you go "WTH?" Replaced, is a
woman who knows exactly what to wear and how to wear it. I believe if
she was sans David Beckham, she'd still be conquering the world!
Thigh High Boots
Thigh high boots. Those three words aren't usually on the fashion
tongues of many. Why? Because a lot of people still associate it with
all things Pretty Woman (if you know what I mean).
But I am of the belief that it can be pretty, as well as bold and sexy.
I
purchased a pair of thigh high boots a few years ago from Pump. I went
home, tried it on and had a 'what were you thinking? moment. I couldn't
see past Pretty Woman. I told myself I couldn't leave the house wearing
it, that I wasn't brave enough.
Three years later, I
remembered my unworn boots and decided it was time to clean the dust off
the box and take them out. I knew the only way I could wear it (and
tone the look down), would be to team it with something less bold, more on the 'pretty' side of things:
a flowery dress. So here is the look:
Outfit Edit: Dress by Zimmermann; Boots by Pump & Clutch by Bardot. |
This trench coat look happened by accident. One Saturday, not too long ago, I went for brunch with the husband in the city and wore a mini leopard play suit, my thigh high boots with this trench draped over me (I was having an 'out-there' moment). It got really windy and cold so I decided to do the trench up, and this is the result- a more refined, mature look:
